Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve
Restored lowland raised bog managed by Cumbria Wildlife Trust — famous for its nesting ospreys, adders and dragonflies.

About
Foulshaw Moss is one of the closest Cumbria Wildlife Trust reserves to Hawkshead, around a 30-minute drive south near Witherslack. A boardwalk loop crosses the restored raised bog with viewing platforms, including an osprey watchpoint with a live nest camera in season (April–August). Look for adders basking in spring, white-faced darter dragonflies in summer and large heath butterflies on the bog. The Trust runs guided walks, osprey-watch sessions and family events here through the year — check the events calendar before you go.
Roger Recommends
"Dogs are not permitted (ground-nesting birds). Visit May–July for the best chance of seeing ospreys on the nest — the volunteers at the watchpoint are brilliant and have scopes set up."
