About

Barkbooth Lot sits in the quiet country between Windermere and the Lyth Valley, around 25 minutes from Hawkshead. The reserve combines rough fell, grassland, wetland and woodland, providing habitat for dragonflies, damselflies and the rare high brown fritillary butterfly. A network of informal paths leads up to a small tarn with views east towards the Howgills. The Trust occasionally runs guided butterfly and dragonfly walks here in summer.

Roger Recommends

"Parking is limited to a small lay-by on the lane — go early. Combine with lunch at the Punch Bowl Inn at Crosthwaite for a perfect quiet day."
