About

The Fairfield Horseshoe is one of the Lake District's most rewarding ridge walks. Starting from Ambleside, the route climbs steadily to Low Pike and High Pike before continuing around the sweeping horseshoe to Hart Crag, Dove Crag and the summit of Fairfield. The descent returns via Nab Scar, completing a memorable circuit above the Rothay and Rydal valleys. On clear days the views extend across Windermere, the Coniston fells and the Langdale Pikes. The full route is a serious mountain day, with steep ground and some rocky sections; come prepared with proper boots, map, compass and the usual mountain kit.

Roger Recommends

"Start early and go clockwise to tackle the steepest ascent on fresh legs; the summit of Fairfield is broad and can be tricky in mist, so keep close to your map."
